Alternative Fuel/Cooking and Baking Ideas

Did you know that 300 lbs. of charcoal will make two hot meals a day for one year!  For a lot of us who don't have a lot of room for storing fuel, like wood, this is a possible solution.  Charcoal can be used not only with a grill (a small, Hibachi style, grill is more efficient) but also with Dutch Ovens.  Dutch Ovens can be used to bake in too!  I knew Dutch Ovens were good for cooking just about everything but hadn't realized that it was a good way to bake bread if the electricity was out for a long time.  I have lots of wheat but had never thought how I would bake it if there were a disaster.

I have been told that the best way to store charcoal is in metal trash cans with a lid.  My guess this is to keep water out and if it was exposed to heat it would not ignite (like oil soaked rags?).

Dutch Ovens can be purchased at Smith and Edward's, IFA, on-line (Amazon, or straight from the manufacturer) and most recreational (camping) stores.  Most are manufactured by Lodge Cast Iron and have many sizes and styles and other accessories, including cook books.  You can get them already seasoned too!  Check out this link: Lodge Dutch Ovens.
