Alternative Fuel/Cooking and Baking Ideas

Did you know that 300 lbs. of charcoal will make two hot meals a day for one year!  For a lot of us who don't have a lot of room for storing fuel, like wood, this is a possible solution.  Charcoal can be used not only with a grill (a small, Hibachi style, grill is more efficient) but also with Dutch Ovens.  Dutch Ovens can be used to bake in too!  I knew Dutch Ovens were good for cooking just about everything but hadn't realized that it was a good way to bake bread if the electricity was out for a long time.  I have lots of wheat but had never thought how I would bake it if there were a disaster.

I have been told that the best way to store charcoal is in metal trash cans with a lid.  My guess this is to keep water out and if it was exposed to heat it would not ignite (like oil soaked rags?).

Dutch Ovens can be purchased at Smith and Edward's, IFA, on-line (Amazon, or straight from the manufacturer) and most recreational (camping) stores.  Most are manufactured by Lodge Cast Iron and have many sizes and styles and other accessories, including cook books.  You can get them already seasoned too!  Check out this link: Lodge Dutch Ovens.

More Case Lot Sales!

Dan's and Winegar's case lot sales are just wrapping up.  Macey's is just starting (prices good from Sep 24-Sep 30).  They have 25 lb. Western Family granulated sugar for $8.99 (a 30+ year home storage product).  This is about the best price you will get this year.  They have: Western Family diced or stewed tomatoes, WF chicken or tomato soup, WF corn or cut beans for 49¢ each (case of 24 for $11.76), Campbell's cream soups (mushroom or chicken) and WF tuna for 69¢ ($33.12/case of 48).  They also have: Albacore solid white tuna for 99¢ ea. (24/$23.76), WF Clover Honey 80-oz. bottle for $7.99, WF tomato sauce for 19¢ each (case of 48 for $19.16), WF brownie mixes at 99¢ ea. (case of 12 for $11.88).  Their cake mixes are 89¢ ea. (case of 12 for $10.68) and evaporated milk for 79¢ ea. (case of 24 for $18.96).  Two more that I need to mention are cooking oil (Canola ore Vegetable) 128 oz. for $7.99 ea. and Nonfat dry milk at $13.79 ea.  These are all great basic food storage items.  There are other great deals there as well.
Reams is not in a case lot sale but right now they have Pork Loin Chops, Pork Loin End Roast, and "Country Style" Prok Ribs all at $1.59/lb., cake mixes at 88¢ ea. and Progresso Soups 10/$10. Prices good till Sep. 29th.
Smith's also has boneless, skinless chicken breasts at $1.59/lb., Pork Picnic Roast at $1.39/lb.  and red seedless grapes at 99¢/lb (I know that grapes aren't a food storage item, but it is a good price).  Prices good till Sep. 30th.

Deals and CASE LOT SALES!

I apologize for not getting this on the blog sooner!  It was a crazy week for me.  Winegar's, Smith's and Reams are having their case lot sales-Reams ends on Tuesday so tomorrow is the last day.  SORRY!  I am not sure when Winegar's sale ends (call before you go).  Smith's ends on Wednesday.
Reams is having a killer deal on boneless, skinless chicken breasts for $1.39/lb.!  You can even buy a 40 lb. case for $1.30/lb. (for a total of $52.00).  Reams is also selling green beans, corn or peas 2/$1 (case of 24 for $12), tomato sauce 6/$1 (case of 48 for $8), and chicken noodle or tomato soup 2/$1 (case of 24 for $12) and 25 lb. of sugar for $8.88 (usually $11-$12 lately).
Maceys case lot sale will be coming up soon but in the meantime, they have Butt Roast for $1.49/lb. and Western Family Pancake mix (56 oz.) 2/$5.oo!  The pancake mix is the kind that you just add water to and is perfect for Food Storage. The sale on these items ends on Wednesday.
I was told today (Sun. Sept. 14th) that Smith's is having a sale on cheese (block or shredded) 6 lb. box for $14.99.  That is a great price on cheese and the shredded kind keeps well in the freezer.  I couldn't find this in their add so call before you go to make sure that it is still valid/available.
If you shop at Albertson's they are having their 10 for $10 sale on several items including Hunt's Spaghetti Sauce, S&W Kidney Beans and  Albertson's Refried Beans, Corn Starch and Mandarine Oranges (some items are mix and match if you don't want 10).

Fabulous Whole Wheat Bread

This recipe is courtesy of Judy Williams-a lovely lady I met at the cannery.  It truly is a fabulous bread recipe.

In mixer place:
2 eggs
5 c. hot water
2/3 c. raw sugar or honey (Judy regularly uses sugar)
2/3 c. oil (olive oil is recommended)
2 t. salt
2 T. SAF yeast (a little more if cold weather)

Mix thoroughly. Add 5-6 cups of freshly ground wheat flour.  Then slowly add one cup of flour at a time till dough pulls away from sides of bowl (still sticky and not stiff).  Kneed for 10 minutes.

Preheat oven to 250° F.

Place wax paper on counter and spray lightly with non-stick spray.  Divide dough into eight pieces.  Spray hands with non-stick spray and flatten each piece of dough on the wax paper into a pancake shape and then fold the top down to the middle, bottom to the middle and sides to the middle as well and pinch together.  Turn seam side down, lightly shape loaf and place into greased 1/2 sized loaf pan.  (Can use regular loaf pans, just divide dough into 4 pieces, but 1/2 sized loaves are recommended).  Turn off preheated oven.  Place bread in oven to raise for approx. 20 minutes or till bread is 1" above rim of pans.  Then turn oven back on to 375° F and bake 20-25 minutes until lightly browned.

Tips:
Loaves store well in freezer bags in the freezer for a couple of weeks.  When ready to use, pull one out, place in microwave for 2 minutes (1/2 sized loaf) and you'll have warm bread just like from the oven!

Judy also recommends using the hard white wheat instead of the hard red wheat for a smoother flavor and texture.  (Shelf life for both types of wheat are 30+ years).

Beef Stroganoff-Fast, Easy and Several Food Storage Items

1 can beef chunks (can use stew meat, 1 lb. ground beef, browned, etc.)
1/2 onion, chopped (can use dried onions)
1/2 green pepper, chopped
1 can Cream of Mushroom soup
1 can Mushrooms (can use 1 c. sliced fresh)
1/2 carton Sour Cream

In 2 T. olive oil, saute onion, green pepper, and mushrooms.  Season as desired with salt and pepper.  Add beef chunks and heat through.  Then add mushroom soup.  Add sour cream just before serving over rice or egg noodles.

When I cook my rice I add dried green peppers and they reconstitute beautifully.
